Bob Corkey.  TV & Film Director. 

Bob Corkey’s interest in film began in his home town of Tralee, in his local film club in the late 1970’s. This was the movie era of George Lucas’s first Star Wars epic, Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter.

Starting with Super 8 and 16mm cameras, he carved out a sort of early career in film making by making short promotional films and recording the odd wedding doc for friends.

His amateur mini-epics had to be made by editing “in camera”, as the basic cutting equipment of the time didn’t lend itself to client recuts. So everything he shot then was, by definition, a “Director’s cut”! It proved a great learning curve however, leading to a job in film production beginning in London, and later in RTÉ, in Dublin.

A long career in Broadcast TV Film Production, TV Programme series and Independent documentary projects followed. He directed a long series of movie review shows where he met such movie talents as Donald Sutherland, Danny De Vito, Neil Jordan, Mark Hamill, and many others. He once tried to interview the legendary Stanley Kubrick on location in Ireland, but only got as far as security cordon No.3, though he did manage a distant photo.

Bob has enjoyed lecturing at the National Film School at IADT for some years, in TV production. He was involved in the annual FÍS Movie Making in Schools festival finals for many years. He has contributed to many training courses and books, on film and video techniques.

Bob’s love of movies hasn’t dimmed, and he’s still glued to streaming services and You Tube, following the latest in creative film making. He still takes out his Super 8 camera now and again… as an app on his iPhone, mainly.
