Ashbourne Film Festival 2024 is thrilled to announce the screening of the Oscar nominated feature film ‘An Cailín Ciúin’ (The Quiet Girl) from writer and director Colm Bairéad and producer Cleona Ní Chrualaoí.
Based on author Claire Keegan’s novella ‘Foster’ this coming of age drama was Colm Bairéad’s debut feature film. The film has gone on to receive numerous accolades including a nomination at the 2023 Academy Awards aswell as 11 nominations with seven wins at the 18th Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAS) amongst others.
Set in 1981 we meet a withdrawn nine year old girl raised by neglectful parents among many other siblings. She is sent to spend the summer on a farm in Rinn Waterford with a married childless couple who are distantly related to her. There she experiences a loving home for the first time.
A beautiful, poignant and quiet film, its unassuming nature makes this all the more effective. A must see on the big screen.
